There are no proper cards for the emotions of 2020, but here are a few that come close to putting what this year and moment in history feels like. If you know me, you know I love sending and receiving cards. If you are finding yourself feeling disconnected, lonely, or isolate, you are not alone...
These Empathy Postcards were designed to make it even easier for you to be there when it really matters: during life’s hardest moments, like major illness or loss.
You can send or give one at a time, or send them in a series—once a week, say—to the same person, whether it’s over the duration of a treatment, at any time following a tragedy (not just during the first days or weeks!) or for any particularly difficult few months.
Sometimes, things happen that are so tough, so painful, that anything you can do or say on a card seems inadequate. This is a card for those times.
Here's the thing about "God's plan." Much like "everything happens for a reason," some people find this belief to be genuinely comforting. But when you're in the middle of something absolutely terrible and tragic and your whole world has fallen apart, it can be a really maddening, frustrating (and sometimes throwing-things-inducing) thing to hear. Like, really? Was this the best he could do?
You’re Not a Burden. You’re a Human.
Mental illness is insidious, and warps your thinking. When you're struggling with being alive and functional in the world, being perceived by others as a "burden" is often a big fear. This card is a way to reach out to someone having a hard time, and remind them they're loved and supported no matter what.
Grief is a long, shitty process. After the initial shock, the rest of the world moves on, leaving a grieving person in a foggy kind of limbo. Let them know you get it, and you’re here for it.
When you need to let someone know that the things we survive are what make us magnificent, consider this Japanese custom, called kintsugi. Then maybe take them to sushi, another Japanese custom that always makes me feel better but doesn't really make for a poetic greeting card.
